The CADDIE SCHOOL team

Don J. Snyder

Founder & Chief Executive Director

Don (Pictured on the right) with PGA Tour caddie, Ray Farnell, whom he took for a spin around the Old Course prior to the Open Championship in 2010.
Don grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania where the World War II soldiers were fathers of his boyhood.  His own father returned from the war in the Pacific and married the only girl he ever loved. Her name was Peggy. Nine months later she gave birth to his twin sons and then died.  He was shattered and spent that autumn sleeping on her grave.  In the mornings, soldiers he had gone to war with, would swing by the cemetery and take him to the coffee shop in town to try to help him talk through his grief.
When Don’s father finally told him this story about how the WWII soldiers had saved his life, it was 1998 and his father was dying of a brain tumor. Don set out to write a book about his mother’s brief love story with his father. Of Time & Memory was published in 2000 by Alfred A. Knopf of New York. During his research Don discovered that Peggy was only nineteen years old and that she was dying slowly through her pregnancy but rather than save her own life, she chose to carry her twins to full term. She died sixteen days later. She had made her doctor promise never to tell anyone so that her sons would not have to go through life knowing they had caused her death.
When Don learned this he became haunted, day and night, and a great darkness settled over his life. He found his way to Scotland and it was working there as caddie at Kingsbarns and The Old Course that saved him.  Each round of golf he caddied gave him the chance to disappear from his own story and enter the story of the golfer at his side. Gradually that feeling of being haunted lifted.
Ten years later when he learned of the soldiers haunted by what they had been through, he knew that working as caddies could save their lives as well. He began to see that his own darkness and the years of being haunted had prepared him perfectly to minister to these soldiers.  And so, in 2018 he established the school to honor the World War II soldiers who rescued his father from desolation, and to honor this new generation of soldiers by preparing them for a profession as caddies where they could rise above the darkness into the light.

David Scott

President of the Board

Born in St. Andrews, David is a Master Professional for the PGA of U.K and Ireland.  As General Manager at Dumbarnie Links in Scotland, David takes time away each session to come and help mentor and support the current class of veterans.  David has been gracious with his time by helping teach classes on the fundamentals of being a caddie as well as give golf clinics for our veterans.  He has also allowed our veterans to enjoy some time doing loops at Dumbarnie as well as allowing them to play one of Scotland’s newest premier golf properties.

Sean Sutherland

Director of Mentoring

Sean was a participant of our Whistling Straights session in 2021.  While there Sean excelled and showed that he had a passion for helping the school grow.  His irrepressible energy and devotion to the school earned him a chance to travel to Scotland to mentor for the new class that was coming in.  Soon after that session Sean, along with is good friend and participant of that session Luke, traveled to Cabot Cape Breton where they both caddie.  Sean is looking forward to continue helping the school grow over the next few sessions.

Ken McIntosh

Lead UK Mentor

Ken has been involved with the Caddie School for Soldiers since March 2023 when he attended one of our final courses based out of Elie. Honoured to be asked to return as part of the team, he went on to mentor subsequent courses and has now progressed to be the Lead (UK) Mentor where he finds, develops and selects UK candidates for the School.

After injury prematurely ended his 34 year career in the British Army, Ken has found a new purpose and drive helping to further develop the Caddie School.

Neil Ryan

Operations

Neil is our “Boots on the Ground” coordinator for the school.  A local to the St. Andrews area, when Neil and our founder Don met, they quickly became great friends.  It didn’t take long for Don to see that Neil was the right guy to plan, coordinate and oversee the sessions for the CSS.  Since 2019, Neil has been a huge part of the success of the school and we can’t thank him enough for all he does.

Mo Hutchison

Cook, Caterer & Caddie School Mom

Every home needs a mom and we couldn’t think of anyone better than Mo.  She not only cooks for our veterans each session but she makes sure they have anything and everything they need.  Mo graciously spends each day of the session with our veterans and while her initial job was just to cook, it quickly became obvious that she was much more then that to our veterans each session.  It also didn’t take long for the school to see that Mo was the heart of the home our veterans stay in each session.  We are blessed to have her as apart of our team!

Luke Cyr

Ambassador

Luke (pictured on the right) was a participant of the March 2022 session in St. Andrews. Soon after the completion of that session, he traveled to Cabot Cape Breton where he has now completed over 100 loops.  His goal is to hit 200 before the season is over.  While on the course, not a single golfer leaves Luke’s group without hearing about the school and how it’s changed his life.  Many of those golfers have since reached out to tell us about their time with Luke and/or to donate to the school.  We couldn’t be more proud of Luke!

Jimmy Hughes

Caddie Legend, Mentor & Friend

The legend that is Jimmy Hughes.  You wont find a better caddie in all of Scotland then Jimmy.  A thirteen year veteran caddie at Kingsbarns, Jimmy spends countless hours each session coming in to help our current class train and learn from a pro.  We are blessed to call Jimmy a friend and mentor to our veterans.
